The INGOT-1974
What is an ingot?
It is:
1* A mass of metal shaped for convenience in storage or transportation.
2. A casting mold for metal. (Middle English, ingot, mass of metal, "Something
poured into (the mold)"; in, i n + Old English gotin, past participle of aeotan to
pour, cast in Metal.)
This is an ingot as defined in the dictionary. To us at Granite City High School/North
the term. Ingot, has a similar meaning.
Our yearbook is an Ingot, in the sense that the raw ore of school activities is taken by
the yearbook staff and processed, so as to make North's operation intelligible to the
reader. Envision then, a smelting operation, whereby the activities of the administra-
tion, faculty, student body, and other personnel, are analyzed, and finally formed into
a convenient shape for reference and future storage.
The In got is a casting of the educational experience at North, fired by the energies of
the young men and women who will soon become the mature steel of our society-
steel of the finest temper and quality!

Coaches Comment:
This year, the Granite City North Steelers got off to a slow start with a very young team, losing their first four games.
However, with the advantage of having three returning lettermen, who could help the maturing young players, the
Steelers turned their season around, and won four games in a row. In this four game winning streak, the S teelers beat
two of the powerful southwestern teams. We were the only team to shut out Edwardsville in their last twenty-six out-
ings. Because of these four victories, the Steelers were ranked number ten in the area for large schools, IN THEIR
FIRST YEAR OF COMPETITION. We look forward to yet better things ahead! “Thanks," to the eight departing
Seniors. We will carry forth the winning ways you have begun.

Coach 's Comments:
Some people have ability and some have ambition.
Those who succeed have both. The road traveled by
the first team to play under the Steeler banner was
not an easy one. They were attending a new school;
had a new coach who taught a new style of play ;
and, they didn ’t have a soccer field to call their own.
Practice sessions were held in an open field (no goal
posts or boundary lines) about 1 '/i miles from school
and the team ran to and from practice. That’s am-
bition!
The Steelers compiled a season record of 19-5-1;
they were ranked 6th in the state of Illinois; scored
60 goals, while allowing only 17 to be scored against
them, and shut-out opponents in 15 of their 25
games. That’s Ability!
The 1973 Steeler Soccer Club has left its mark-it
will not be an easy job for future Steelers to reach.
Well done lads!

Coaches Comments
Organization was the prime concern in the beginning , as we were a new team, hut we quickly found some wrestlers
who liked to win. We are fortunate in having most of our team back for next year. Our starting juniors are Randy
Hartline, Neil Pierson, Eric Scbmisseur, Jim Starling, Bill Carr, Dave Whitsell, Dave Hamilos, and Jim Barker. Senior
varsity wrestlers are Rudy Pyle, Chester Fetter, John Hankins, and John McMillan. Juniors Terry Johnson and Rick
Morlen and senior Phil Shands have also seen action during the year.
W* had a tough dual meet schedule this year along with two tournaments. In tournaments we were second at Quincy
and third out of sixteen teams at the South Holiday Tourney. We are now getting ready for the District and Sec-
tional tournaments and hope to get someone to state!
Our season has been a good one and the boys have come through with a good job for our first season. We are look-
ing for good things next year.

A New Experience
Even though Granite City North is a new school, which seeks to implement new ideas, it is already becoming a
pleasant memory to those of us who are leaving it.
This year the INGOT has an entirely new and inexperienced staff, but even so, this book is proof that our goal
has been reached. Our editors who produce the various sections of the book have been our mainstay, but the
job could not have been completed without the help of staff members who were non-editors: Randy Moore,
Russell Lewis, Rudy Pyle, Rick Dickerson, Debbie Oliver, Rene Williams, Janet Bunselmeyer, Mike Davis, Eliza-
beth Doroghozi, Donna Ether ton, Nina Failoni, Lisa Gracey, John Hursey, Sharon Koesterer, Marla McGarvey,
Barb Siebert, Anita Simmers, Cindy Smith, Betty Smith, and Jamie Stevens.
We would also like to thank Mr. Robert Johnson for bis guidance and experienced advice in the production of
this book.
We hope that the 1974 INGOT will enable
pleasant of memories.
you to look back on the first year on North s existence, as the most
Good Luck to the “1974” graduates!
